Title overview

For introductory courses in Information Systems and Management Information Systems

Management Information Systems: Managing the Digital Firm provides the most comprehensive overview of information systems used by business firms today, while drawing connections between MIS and business performance. The Laudons are known for their outstanding real-world case studies, which describe how well-known companies use IT to solve problems and achieve business objectives. Students develop sought-after skills, such as leading IS-related management discussions and using IT to meet bottom-line results. Each chapter of the 17th edition features all-new Interactive Sessions, new Video Cases, and a new Career Opportunities section building practical job-seeking skills.

Key features

  • Job-hunting guides
  • Instructions for building a digital portfolio
  • Guidance for incorporating MIS knowledge into resumes, cover letters, and job interviews.
  • Interactive Sessions are two short cases per chapter redesigned as active learning opportunities for use in the classroom or on online discussion boards. Each case concludes with case study questions.
  • Case studies using current examples show how well-known companies use information systems to achieve business objectives, including Uber, NFL, Facebook, Crayola, Walmart, Amazon, Google, Starbucks, and GE.

New to this edition

  • A Career Opportunities section, a new feature of each chapter, helps students use this text as a job hunting and career building tool. It includes an entry-level job description related to chapter topics, business-related questions that might arise during an interview, and tips for answering those questions and preparing for the interview.
  • Chapter 11 has been rewritten with new coverage of artificial intelligence, including machine learning, natural language systems, computer vision systems, and robotics, reflecting surging interest in business uses of AI.
  • Coverage of social business now examines 'deep learning,' supervised learning, unsupervised learning, edge computing, 5G networks, general data protection regulation (GDPR), blockchain, data lake, distributed database, and FinTech.
  • Updated text, figures, tables, and cases draw on the latest sources from industry and MIS research.
